Lower Fort Garry, Manitoba

Lower Fort Garry is about a half-hour drive north of Winnipeg along the Red River. This was one of the major Hudson's Bay Company outposts and is unique because it is primarily constructed of stone.

The Fort

The stone used in making the palisade was the Tyrill limestone. The same stone used in the construction of the Manitoba Legislative building.

The Upper House is located in the center of the fort and housed the govenor and the upper class.

This stone warehouse contained the trading post and stored the furs as well as other goods.
