Kakabeka Falls

Kakabeka Falls

Known as the "Niagra of the North", Kakabeka Falls plunge over a sheer 40 meter cliff. The base of the falls was renowned as one of the most gruelling portages that the voyageurs of the past would have to face on their journey north.

Now, Kakabeka Falls is an Ontario Provincial Park and hosts viewing platforms that jut out over the precipice.

The Legend of Princess Greenmantle

A local native legend tells the story of a beautiful Ojibway princess. Captured by the Sioux, their bitter enemies, the princess was forced to lead a war party back to her people's camp. However, the courageous princess instead lead the warriors over the falls. Princess Greenmantle was killed with her enemy, but her memory lives on in legend.

Kakabeka Power Station Kakabeka Power Dam

The power station at the base of Kakabeka Falls supplies power to the surrounding region. During the day, the sluice gates are opened and water is allowed to flow over the falls for the tourists to view. At night, the falls are literally turned off. The force of the redirected water is used to power the power station. During sturgeon spawning season the falls flow continuously.
