Wawa, Ontario

Wawa Location

Wawa is located along the Trans-Canada Highway between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, Ontario. The word Wawa is Ojibway for "Land of the Big Goose". This small town is renowned for its distinctive landmark - a gigantic steel Canada Goose - that was built to commemorate the completion of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1960. This statue is highly visible from the highway and welcomes people to the Wawa Tourist Information Centre (seen with the red roof in the picture below). A stop to photograph the Big Goose is a must for all travellers on their way to Northwestern Ontario!
